Overview
Embilipitiya is a rapidly growing town in Ratnapura District in Sri Lanka. In the 1970s it was a small town with two or three small boutiques. Under the Udawalawe development project, Embilipitiya became a big town and currently it is one of towns in Sri Lanka with a modern infrastructure.Transportation
During the 1970s transportation to and from Embilipitiya was difficult. There were two or three buses from Embilipitiya to Ratnapura and there was no guarantee that they would be running daily. However, the transportation system developed significantly and people now enjoy very efficient transport facilities. There are buses from Embilipitiya to Ratnapura and Colombo every five minutes and the Embilipitiya bus station is one of the busiest in Southern and Sabaragamuwa region.
Education
Before 1970, Embilipitiya was one of the area where there was poor education facilities. However, Embilipitiya got excellent schools recently. Embilipitiya Central College is the only school in Sabaragamuwa and Southern Sri Lanka where there is a swimming pool. Newly established Embilipitiya technical college brought new hopes to school leavers in the area.Embilipitiya Maha Vidyalaya is the second school which was established in 1950 February 28 which is the most popular school in the area which has produced most number of scholars to the nation and the main education institute and international school plays a major role to produce English educated generation to the nation. Due to rapid development of education network in the area, Embilipitiya produced highly skilled and educated people to the country. Thousands of doctors, engineers, lawyers, post graduate scentists, university professors and also reputed sportsmen and sportswomen are hailing from Embilipitiya.

Infrastructure
Embilipitya has branches of almost all private and public banks and also the town is served by number of supermarket chains.
Urban Council
Embilipitiya became an urban council in 2006 and it is the only urban council in Sri Lanka to be promoted from village council and it is a one of four urban councils (Maharagama, Boralesgamuwa and Hikkaduwa) which was established after colonial era. Embilipitiya is the one of four urban councils (Ratnapura, Kegalle and Balangoda) in Sabaragamuwa province.
Economy
The Economic center and the international leader's training center are key institutions in Embilipitiya. The recently established Embilipitya modern town hall is a major achievement in the area. Public and private institutes aim to help people engaged in the small scale food processing sector to develop relevant skills and technology, and to increase their access to information which will contribute towards helping them gain control of their livelihoods and communities.
